Oni

Character design for an Oni. An oni is a monster from Japanese myth, but I wanted to use them as a race of beings for my Myth Project. In process, I started with the naked drawing to get the anatomy, body shape, and position. Then I traced the figure and added clothing. Then I inked the figure. I just really like the idea of a rather large beast man with a horn. Of course, thinking about the Oni as a race of beings is great fun. Where do they live, what do they eat, what do they do for fun are all interesting questions to think about. Creating backstory to a character is part of the fun of drawing. Until next time...

Japanese Family

Hello everyone, well here is the project that started my summer. I had this concept of a Japanese family where everyone in the family has an identifiable shape. It all took me some doing, researching Japan, drawing shapes to see what works, and in coloring, I wanted to try to get better at photoshop. Overall, I'm pleased; I feel like this is my first real attempt at character design where I follow through to the end. It was alot of fun. However, I think I could have pushed some aspects of the design, ah well, I'll get it one day. Just gotta keep drawing.

On process, each image shows the steps I usually go through nowadays. Rough sketch, that I scan in and blow-up, and print-out. Then I cleanup the rough, this is usually the most fun because sometimes even with a rough I'm not sure what will appear. Then I rescan and cleanup alittle more; blow-up the image again, and print again. Then I ink the characters by hand and rescan and clean up once again. In this phase I try to clean it well, mostly because I try to ink fast and usually make many mistakes. Then finally, I added color and there it is. Well, enjoy...

Mars the Martian

Mars is the name of this little guy I sketched for my animation class. Mars is a little martian who came to Earth in the 1950's because of his love of cowboy westerns. His only mission is to meet his idols that he loves to watch, while at the same time act out his fantasy of being a cowboy. His wild imagination, curiosity and interest; in what to him are strange Earth objects and culture, leads to his grand adventure. So here are some cleaned up designs. Until next time...

Knights of Sol (Myth Project)

Some characters from my personal project titled Knights of Sol. Myth the character from the last post gets to meet these two characters, who are Knight Captians. Of the character on bottom I was trying out costume designs. Of the female I like her design which came about after only one sketch, which usually never happens. I usually need to draw a character over and over just to get a design I like. Of my process, about the female captian, the red pencel drawing is a cleanup drawing based off my rough sketch. In the cleaned up drawing I try to get it as close to the final image as possible. However in the inking I added detail. Until next time...

Myth

Myth is the name of this character that has been floating around in my sketchbook for year. He soon became the lead in my own personal project; one that I hope to get out one day. I named him Myth because his very being is a refection of all the myth, legends, and fables that I have read over my lifetime. I give more detail on his character when I publish more drawings of him. Until next time.

Sasuke fanart, and everything inbetween

Hello again everyone. Well, I guess my summer travel is over and boy am I tired, but happy. Visiting Tokyo Japan, seeing the Redwood forests of northern California, and of course the artist heaven of the San Diego Comic Convention were all delightful. Looking back on the memories of the summer so far, I feel blessed to have such great friends and wonderful experiences.

Anyway for the pic. I did some fanart of Sasuke from the Japanese manga comic Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. Sasuke is my favorite although there are many likable characters. I did the drawing of Sasuke with wings because in the manga the character says he is an avenging angel. I wanted to show this and give a hint that he is being pulled in two different directions; one side good, the other side evil. The three images show my process, first starting with a rough sketch, then I tweek and clean up the drawing, and finally add ink. On the inking, I used Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph Pens, which is why the inking is cleaner and tighter, with less variation in line weight, than when I use my crow quill pen and nibs. I did the bold black fill with two coats of ink done with a brush. Take Care until next time.

AnimalDrawing

Ah, a day at the zoo. Well, more like half a dozen haha. But it is a good time. I like to draw animals, and I still need to work on constuction of form, weight, variation of line, and adding a touch of environment. Ah, yes but it is an enjoyable way to spend a day. Well when there are not a great number of people, cause then you can become the attraction haha. People are even funnier animals. hahaha

Arabian Nights

Here are a couple of ink I did for a class as we read 1001 Nights. I really liked the characters of the King and Shaharazad in the story. In the inking I tried to show some contrast in the different style of inking. The Kings is more isolated and inked in a bolder manner. While Shaharazad has a more delicate touch and seems to be in motion. I like to ink, but its a challenge to elevate your original sketch, without messing it all up hahaha. I have a greater respect for inkers who do a much better job than I can. But I will keep on pushing.

backgrounds

These are some backgrounds that I have done over the year. I will admit that I have not done a lot of backgrounds but I would like to do more. Anyway, the black and white inked thumbnail is usually how I begin, when I am searching for just how I want to depict what I imagine. Inked thumbnails are usually the quickest and easiest way to get an Idea out of my head. The red sketch is also done on a small scale to see if the concept is what I really want. The two paintings were done in watercolor, and is the final step.

Knight

Here is an experiment in the Painter program. I don't have much knowledge in computer paint and I must say it is big fun. Programs like Photoshop and Painter are really cool. I just want to get better at all aspects of art.

ZombieMonkey

I can't start a blog without an image!! The ZombieMonkey, is a concept my buddy Steve came up with as the name of our future studio. Haha One day. Anyway here is a little something as a logo.

The Beginning of a Journey

Well, I finally went and got a blog. I love to draw and love the wide expanse of the internet, so I guess it was only a matter of time. So here we go...
