Road to Magic (Countdown 7)

This is the work for the second week.

For Momotaro, the concept was fairly clear in my mind. I did a drawing of Momotaro last week that was super cute. I loved the design, so for this story, I'm going for a younger storybook feel. (Surprising note, I originally saw the character Momotaro as older and more mature.)
Anyway, this week I focused on Momo's animal friends. I have a strong idea for their look, so they are progressing well. The parent I'm keeping the designs simple, and the third character (the large guy) tells Momo and his parent of the invading Oni. So the principal Momo characters are going well. I now need to focus on the look of the Oni, and designing monsters is always fun.

For Little Red, I had alot to do on this concept, so this is where I focused much of my energy for the week.
Finally, the character of Little is starting to take shape. I was trying different variations of how I saw her in my head, and now I'm starting to see something I like.
As for Red the wolf and his buddies, I'm really having fun with them! I have alot of particulars and adjustments to make on all of them but I finally feel like progress is being made.

But what about the third concept Le Mort D'Arthur? This one is giving me the most trouble! This is the one where I have the least clear idea of how I want it to look; this makes it fun but also makes me nervous, and when I'm nervous I start to slow down. So to get in gear, I need to read more on the subject and do more research. Research is fun but can eat up time.
So next weeks blog post will be all about the Arthur concept.

Til next week...

Road to Magic (Countdown 8)

I am going to apply to Disney.

The discipline I am applying for is Visual Development. So I'm starting this countdown to track the progress of the material I will send Disney. The plan is that every Sunday I post my progress. For the visual development portfolio I will submit will be about 20 pieces of artwork. I have 3 stories that I will develop visually. One is Momotaro, two is Little Red Riding Hood (Little Red), and the third is Le Mort d'Arthur. Of the 20 art pieces 5 will be from each of the stories and the last 5 will be freestyle; one of which will be the Peter Pan image that is farther down on the blog.

This week we start with Character Designs for Momotaro and Little Red.

The Battle (NarutoVsSasuke Part 2)

"The Battle of Monsters" is the end of the NarutoVsSasuke saga from Masashi Kishimoto's manga Naruto.
So this time instead of flat more cel shading look of color, I tried a ruff painting style.

The Battle (NarutoVsSasuke Part 1)

So the manga "Naruto" is one of my favorites to read. I remember seeing the current story arc that is now being shown on Cartoon Network a couple years ago in Japan. Watching it again brought back good memories.

Day Trip with Ken

So, I recently heard Capcom is making Street Fighter 4. The news of the new game made me remember all the good times I had playing. This made me want to draw Ken, he's my favorite character to play, and so that's what I did today.
Ah, good times.

RandomSketches (CAT)

Yep, I'm here again! After a break, and going to the wedding of a friend, and then the funeral for another friend. I was in a funk, and I was struggling to draw. But I think I have found my grove again! Yippee!!

Happy Holidays

Peter Pan (Following the Leader)

Peter Pan was a childhood favorite of mine. When I was a child, Disney classics would return to theaters ever so often; before VHS and DVD were popular, and I saw Peter Pan seven times in theaters ( and drove my family crazy). Good times.

Anyway, the background is a watercolor painting and the characters were done in photoshop. The pencil tonal sketch was the basis for the painting.

XMen (early ruffs)

The XMen were a childhood favorite of mine. Right now I'm trying to get a feel for the characters. The fun part is pushing and pulling the characters to see where I can go; finding what I do and don't like.

These are early ruffs of my favorite characters; Wolvie, Nightcrawler, Beast, Colossus, and Cyclops for the guys. Storm, Marvel Girl, Shadow Cat, Rogue, and Jubilee for the girls.

What can I say (Ninja Girls Rock)

I grew up in awe of the Capcom artists. So I was once again looking at the Capcom DesignWorks book, and the Street Fighter Artbook, and started sketching and this was the result. Ibuki was one of my favorites to play in Street Fighter 3rd Strike (Ken is still my all time favorite). I tip my hat to all the artist at Capcom, and to the people I have lost to at Street Fighter haha.

Blog Anniversary Year 1

Happy Anniversary Blog! Wow, the blog turns a year old. How quickly the years turn as I get older. I originally started the blog after going to San Diego Comic Con 06, and after going to SD Comic Con 07 my commitment to art is renewed. So many talented artists.

So todays art was an experiment. I wanted to try something like an animated cel. The background was a little piece done in watercolor; while the figures were done in photoshop.

The Iliad

I have trouble reading books, because I either fall asleep or start drawing. This time is The Iliad which still remains unfinished, but I had to get some drawings of the cast. From left to right are: Ajax, Menelaus, Agamemnon, Achilles, and Odysseus. One day I should finish the book, but I have some Harry Potter to read before the last book comes out.

Of other interests, I think I'm going to slow down on all the character line-ups. I would like to focus more on color, which is my "Achilles heel" of sorts. So I think I am going to see how much I can improve in a year, as I come up on my one year anniversary of the blog. I will still be drawing and inking, to be sure, but just a slight shift in focus.

Myth and the Black Dog (WIFN)

Dog... Wolf, whatever. There are tales of when walking alone at night, a monstrous, gigantic black dog will walk along side you breathing an icy cold breath.
